Inspector General failing to report people mentally unfit to carry a gun
According to Chicago’s Inspector General Joe Ferguson, the city has failed to report people who may be mentally unfit to carry a gun. The Firearm Owners Identification Card Act requires law enforcement to notify state police within a 24 hour period after determining someone poses a clear danger. The Chicago Police Department has made one report to the state out of 37 incidents over the last 3 years. The inspector general recommended that police officers be trained on reporting requirements and that the report forms are made easily accessible for the officers. A spokesperson for the department, Anthony Guglielmi, says the department is adopting these recommendations.
