WNBA’s Chicago Sky Moves to South Loop

The WNBA’s Chicago Sky has had Chicago in its name since they formed in 2006, but for nearly eight years they’ve been playing in Rosemont’s Allstate Arena. Now that’s all about to change. The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) just approved an agreement to bring the Sky to Chicago’s South Loop. A brand new arena, named Wintrust Arena is set to open this fall and will be the Sky’s future home starting their 2018 season.

Rendition of Wintrust Arena

The arena will hold over 10,000 fans and will also be the home to DePaul University’s men and women basketball teams. The contract is set for a 5-year contract with the venue where they will play all 17 home games and host any team promotional events. The move and arena is exciting news for the growing South Loop Bronzeville community.
