New opioid treatment offered at Cook County hospitals

A new alternative detox is being offered at Cook County hospitals to help those suffering from an opioid addiction. The medication, Suboxone, is part of a new addiction treatment plan known as medication-assisted treatment (MAT) which pairs prescription medication with therapy and counseling. Patients also undergo regular counseling appointments with a doctor and a recovery coach. The under-the-tongue strip satiates the addicts cravings, but doesn’t cause drowsiness or a similar opioid high. Administering the prescription does require doctors to have extra training.
