Using the data from the latest FBI Uniform Crime Report, as well as their own population data and internal research, the National Council for Home Safety and Security has announced a list of the safest cities in Illinois.
Coming in at the number one place is a small city that’s about half an hour drive from downtown Chicago. With a population of 13,446, Western Springs boasts a total of zero violent crimes and 35 property crimes.
“Of course it’s a great honor,” said the Deputy Chief of Police in Western Spings, Daniel Albrecht. “We pride ourselves on the safety of the town.”
When Chicago News asked Deputy Chief Albrecht about some of the ways Western Springs remains one of the safest cities in Illinois, he said, “Education, crime prevention, having officers visible, teaching our officers the newest crime trends, and good social media.” Albrecht also highlighted the importance of community involvement, especially when it comes to the use of social media for reporting crimes and giving “tips” to the police.
Here is a top ten list for the safest cities in Illinois: 1. Western Springs 2. Channahon 3. Campton Hills 4. Waterloo 5. Homer Glen 6. Lindenhurst 7. Buffalo Grove 8. Cary 9. Lake Forest 10. Palos Hills
Our Windy City did not make that list. According to heyjackass.com, Chicago has already lost 48 victims to homicide, and consistently ranks as one of the cities with the highest crime rates in America.
“It’s apples and oranges,” said Deputy Chief Albrecht when Chicago News asked him for advice on how Chicago cops, as well as the community as a whole, can make the city safer. Albrecht admitted that the demographics between the two cities differs greatly, but he emphasized again the importance of police visibility.
“We’re fortunate to be in a very nice community. Visible presence with our officers really makes a big difference,” Albrecht said.
