Citizen Utility Board Fights Nicor Gas’ Huge Rate Hike

The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) is fighting Nicor Gas’ $208.5 million rate-hike request – which would be the largest gas increase in Illinois history – arguing that at least $85.7 million or 41 percent should be slashed, “mainly because the company is seeking a bloated profit rate for its shareholders,” CUB stated in a press release.

The utility company made more than $2 billion in profits in 2016 and said its 8.3 percent hike would increase bills for a typical residential customer by about $4.79 a month, or $57 a year, CUB stated.

“All utility companies need resources to provide adequate service, but that doesn’t entitle them to exorbitant rate hikes they don’t need or deserve,” CUB Executive Dir. David Kolata said in the press statement.
