Chicago house fire leaves 10 children dead, neglect investigation underway

Eight children were discovered dead early Sunday morning on Sacramento Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood, after firefighters put out the fire. Two more victims, both 14, later died at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, said Natalia Derevyanny, a Cook County Bureau of Administration spokeswoman.

According to officials, Illinois authorities are investigating allegations of neglect. However, little to no details were provided about what started the fire and why the children weren’t able to get out. Based on the contradictory statements from fire officials, mayor and the building owner it’s still unclear whether or not there were smoke detectors in the house and whether or not they were in a working condition.

The fire happened while two extended families were having a sleepover. The children killed ranged in age from 3 months to 16 years old.

Firefighters went door-to-door Monday on the blocks surrounding Sacramento and Cermak, distributing fire safety information and smoke detectors.
