Education Secretary Betsy DeVos told Senate committee that the Federal Commision on School Safety will not focus on the role guns play in school violence. The commission was set up this year after the Parkland school massacre. The commission was set to examine age restrictions on firearm purchases, consumption of violent media and media coverage on mass shootings.
In recent weeks, the commission held meetings with survivors of school attacks. Devos stated, “Our focus is on raising up successful, proven techniques and approaches to ensuring schools are safe.” However, throughout the meeting, DeVos evaded many questions about guns and gun control. Senate members encouraged DeVos to rethink and examine countries where school shootings are nonexistent. DeVos said the commission will make its recommendation by the end of the year.
