Emanuel Emails Reveal Talks of O’Hare Hyperloop
After some pressure, Mayor Rahm Emanuel released over 1,000 pages of his personal emails from March, April and May of this year. Included in those conversations were discussion of many things, but what stuck out most was his emails about building an underground high-speed rail tunnel or hyperloop between O’Hare and the Loop.
The public was made aware a little earlier this year that Emanuel and Tesla CEO (among other ventures) Elon Musk discussed bringing a hyperloop to Chicago. The plan to connect O’Hare and the Loop through a high-speed underground train peaked the interest of serial-entrepreneur Elon Musk. The recently-released emails show, however, that it was Valor Equity Partners founder Antonio Gracias that got Emanuel and Musk connected toward this venture.
Gracias and his wife contributed thousands to the mayor’s campaign fund and is close friends with Musk. The question is whether Gracias pushed the tunnel idea forward or Emanuel reached out to Gracias and Musk. Both sides are stating it was Emanuel who asked to discuss a more efficient way of traveling to and from O’Hare. The mayor has agreed to release batches of his personal emails from time to time after both the Chicago Tribune and Better Government Association sued with claims he was hiding government business from the public in his personal emails.
