The Empty Bottle provides the setting for the annual Handmade Market of Chicago every year. This year the beloved Ukrainian Village tradition returns to the space this weekend to celebrate and honor crafters from all across the city. The market has over 30 sellers that bring in their arts and crafts to sell at the local level. The event takes place indoors during the chilly season and is special to makers of all things beautiful and to the people who appreciate the unique and handmade items.

Then They Came for Me: Incarceration of Japanese Americans during WW II and the Demise of Civil Liberties is an exhibition that takes a hard look at the way Japanese Americans were treated during WWII. This powerful exhibition shows through photos and videos over 120,000 Japanese Americans that were incarcerated without due process or other constitutional protections that they had rights to. The exhibit is both powerful and humbling. It’s a completely free exhibition that ends November 19, so come experience this powerful gallery for yourself.

Capturing Stories is a collection of portraits of American writers by the award-winning photojournalist Art Shay. Shay is the author of almost 70 books and recorded photographs for over 50 years. Photographs of everything from pop personalities to postwar America were captured on camera by Shay. He’s the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Lucie Foundation and you can catch this temporary exhibit at the American Writers Museum until March. Shay is 95-years-old today.

Winner of five Tony Awards and said to be one of Broadway’s most original musicals, Fun Home is almost gone for the season. A compelling musical inspired by Alison Bechdel’s best-selling graphic memoir Fun Home is a moving story for all to see. Unraveling Alison’s childhood and memories of growing up through a series of old memories and conversations are on display live on stage. The journey unfolds of her coming out and accepting herself. If you’ve wanted to see this story now’s your chance! The run ends November 19.
