Cafe Con Leche offers solid Mexican food in Logan Square

Cafe Con Leche in Logan Square provides a solid dining experience. My girlfriend, Ashley, made reservations here last weekend to celebrate her birthday. Because it’s so incredibly busy, thank goodness Ashley booked our table in advance. Shortly after being seated, our waitress, Ingrid, introduced herself and asked if we’d like drinks. I ordered a bottle of Corona and Ashley asked for a frozen margarita. Somehow, Ingrid knew it was Ashley’s special day and she returned with the beverages we ordered and two complimentary shots of tequila. Although I rarely consume hard liquor, we saluted each other and slammed the spirits. We appreciated Ingrid’s gesture and thanked her for being so thoughtful.

For starters, we selected their Queso Fundido ($8.95) with tortillas. Our appetizer arrived quickly and looked tasty. However, because the mozzarella cheese was blistering, we waited for a few minutes to let the hors d’oeuvre cool. Once cooled, Ashley and I devoured this delicious sampler. The cheese was fresh, wonderfully gooey and simply great!

While a bus person cleared our plates and refilled our waters, Ingrid asked if we were ready to order. I chose a grilled skirt steak ($22.95) and Ashley selected a dish of goat cheese quesadillas ($8.95). Our main entrees were promptly prepared and presented with simple elegance. My steak was served with grilled green onion, nopal salad, Mexican rice, refried beans and grilled jalapeños and Ashley’s quesadillas included a black bean spread and side of guacamole. My meat was a tad overcooked and charred. However, it wasn’t burnt or lacking juiciness. Overall, while not broiled to perfection, my steak was tasty. Ashley raved about her quesadillas, ate the entire portion and said, “they were the best (she) ever had.”

Albeit an enjoyable outing, we did have some minor complaints. Ashley’s frozen margarita was too sweet and, as previously mentioned, my steak was a bit overdone. Moreover, this environment’s loud and utterly bustling. Nonetheless, Cafe Con Leche is an altogether impressive Mexican restaurant that should be tried.
