9 killed, 30 wounded in Chicago this weekend

Nine people were killed and 30 were wounded in shootings across the city over the weekend. Police identified many of the shootings as gang-related.

A man was walking near 16th and Homan, when someone got out of a gray Jaguar and began shooting. 30-year-old Kennedy Blount was pronounced dead at 7:24 pm Friday at Mount Sinai hospital.

Friday, at around 10pm a 25-year-old man was walking near 79th and Muskegon. Someone walked up to the victim and shot him in the head and leg. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around 1:40 am Saturday two people were standing on the street near 72nd and Western when someone shot at them. 25-year-old Schott Strahan was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center at 2:52 am. The other victim is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Around 6:10 am Saturday, 30-year-old David Thomas was shot multiple times near 45th and Champlain. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:33 am.

Around 8:20 pm Saturday, a 40-year-old man was shot in the 7600 block of South Rhodes. A gunman got out of a car and began shooting. The victim was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago trauma center.

Around 1:10 am Sunday, 6 people were gathered outside at 64th and Eberhart in West Woodlawn. A shooter opened fire, possibly from a passing car. 39-year-old Tyrone White was shot and pronounced dead at Chicago Trauma Center at 1:37am. Five other people were injured. Police Supt Eddie Johnson said two of the victims are members of the same gang and have extensive history with the police.

1:15 am Sunday, a 29-year-old man was sitting in his car near Garfield and Winchester, when someone walked up to his car and shot him. The victim, Devane Walker, drove his car a short distance before hitting a parked car. He was taken to the University of Chicago trauma center and pronounced dead at 4:46am.

Around 3:20am Sunday, a man was walking near 95th and Halsted when someone in a passing vehicle shot him several times. Cornelius Bell, 24, was shot several times in the chest, stomach, back, and arms. He was taken to the University of Chicago trauma center and was pronounced dead at 4:01am.

A man was sitting on a porch Sunday when he was shot in the chest and back several times. The shooting occurred just after 5pm on Sunday in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The victim, 26-year-old Gregory Jodie, was pronounced dead at 5:35 pm.

At least 30 other people were wounded in shootings across the city over the past weekend, despite the efforts of the Chicago Police to reduce crime. According to CPD, the department is working with community organizations and faith-based groups to increase safety throughout the city.
